According to Inside PR, Public Relations like most fields of occupation, has a lot more to it than meets the eye.  PR firms make their money by marketing organizations and businesses. What if you are asked to market a tobacco company, and you are opposed to the recreational use of tobacco products? What if the morals of an organization, you are considering taking on, go against the morals of one of your employees? Is the business you are about to work with, a good fit in your PR firm?

Finally could your decision to help this client, give your company a bad reputation in the community? It is true that a PR firm needs business, but good business is the key.

If you are over a public relations company, you need to understand that your employees are a very important part or your company. Employees should be confident and easy for customers to work with. They should also be aware that whatever they write on public networking sights such as Twitter, can come back to the company in a bad way, if there is not some precaution taken.

It is important to make clear policy guidelines as to what employees should and shouldn’t do. This is because what one person thinks is acceptable, another person may find very inappropriate. However, the employer should also try to help the employees excel in their strengths and highlight the good things they are doing and can continue to do. If the company is bigger, you may want to develop a team of people that your employees can consult with in these areas.

There are a lot of PR podcasts on the Internet, and they can be very beneficial to PR students and new PR practitioners, because you hear from professionals all over the country and receive advice from people who are knowledgeable. There is so much you have to learn through experience, but if you can learn from someone else’s errors or victories it may give you a better first step.

However, in general being a student or new PR practitioner can be overwhelming, and a great place to get some good information, on how to stay organized and calm is The Creative Career.  There are other helpful websites like Inside PR, which was discussed in the aforementioned paragraphs.
